How will BSCS prepare and support my child for transition from KS3 (7-8) to KS4 (9-11)?
- During Y8 students are prepared for the process of selecting suitable GCSE and BTEC courses. This begins with information assemblies and the provision of a Pathways Booklet, which students bring home to discuss with parents/carers.
- The Year 8 Pathways Evening takes place early in term 3. This is ‘marketplace’ event in which subject teachers present examples of work undertaken during their GCSE and BTEC courses. The evening provides opportunities for parents/carers and students to find out key information about courses
- All Y8 students are offered a Pathways interview with a member of the Senior Leadership Team, in which advice and guidance is given to support students with their Pathways choices. For students with SEND, this meeting will usually take place with the SENCo
- During the Pathways interview, students with more complex learning difficulties may be guided towards the Blue Pathway, which offers more opportunities for vocational learning and provides more bespoke packages of support. This includes the StepUp qualification, which offers preparation for work and independent living and provides units at a lower level to GCSE, such as Entry Level and Level 1 (equivalent to a D-G grade at GCSE
Students with Statements or EHCPs will also be seen by the school’s Learning Mentor and Careers Guidance Counsellor.
