Transition from Year 6

Welcome to Bradley Stoke Community School!

Congratulations on being allocated a place at Bradley Stoke Community School for September 2011.

My name is Ms. Taylor and I am the Student Support Leader for Key Stage 3 and I work on the Student Support Team.

I will be coming out to see most of you in your primary schools over the coming weeks and for those of you who are coming from primary schools where it is only you, or only you and one or two others, you should have received a letter inviting you to come into Bradley Stoke Community School to meet with me in a couple of weeks time. These sessions will be an opportunity for to ask lots of questions and to find out information about some of the things that you may be a little bit worried about! There will also be a meeting for your parents on Tuesday 21st June, so that we can answer some of their questions and give them lots of information.

Transition Day is taking place on Tuesday 12th July. This is an opportunity for you to meet with your tutor, to meet other students who are going to be part of your tutor group, to start to learn your way around school and to experience a day at secondary school!

Moving from primary school to secondary school is a big step and we understand that. There are lots of people to support you through this transition period and we know that you are bound to be a little bit nervous or anxious – this is perfectly normal! Why don’t you have a look at the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) section to see if there is a question that you have that there’s an answer for already!

There will be lots of information appearing on this part of the website over the coming weeks, so please keep checking in to make sure that you know what’s going on.

I look forward to meeting with you all in the next couple of weeks.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What do I do if I get lost?

  • Use your planner – there is a map in it! The school is on 2 floors – rooms on the Ground floor are marked with the letter G and then a number, rooms on the First floor are marked with the letter F and then the room number, so you will know if you should at least be upstairs or downstairs. If you still can’t find out where you need to be, ask somebody for some help.

How long do I get for lunch?

  • Lunch is 30 minutes – you will soon get used to only having 30 minutes for your lunch break.. This gives you plenty of time to eat your lunch, get some fresh air, use the toilet if you need to and get yourself organised for your next lesson.

How will I know who my tutor is?

  • You will have the opportunity to meet your form tutor on the 12th July.

What do I do if I am having problems with friendships?

  • Tell somebody – talk to your tutor, your parent(s)/carer(s), an adult in school or Student Support. They will help you to sort the problem out. If you don’t tell anybody, they can’t help you!

Can I bring my mobile phone into school?

  • Yes, you can! However, it must be turned off before you come in through the main doors and put away in your locker. It must then stay in your locker until you go home – please don’t turn it on or use it until you have left school.

Can I chew gum?

  • The simple answer to that question is NO!

Will I get lots of IL (homework)?

  • You will be issued with Independent Learning (IL). You should write this in your planner and then complete it ready to hand in on the deadline given. If you get stuck with your IL and you have asked your parent(s)/carer(s) for help, please go and speak to the teacher about it, BEFORE it is due in, so that they can help you.

What do I do if I don’t feel well?

  • If you don’t feel well, or if you have hurt yourself, there is a medical room next to the main office. Go along there and a member of staff will make sure that you are ok.

Do I have to have a school lunch?

  • No, you don’t! You can either bring in sandwiches from home or buy a school lunch. Everybody eats their lunch in the dining room and you can all sit next to each other whether you have packed lunch or school dinners.
